These are a few things I would probably tell my 21 year old self.
1. YOUR FIRST FULL TIME JOB
Its ok if you don’t land in your dream job right out of college but try to stick to your target industry so that when that job comes up your resume sticks out. No matter how humble your beginnings, performing at the highest level with personal accountability will lay the road for you in the future.
Be positive, principled, pro-active, and productive. Be open to change!
2. EDUCATION NEVER ENDS
Being self-driven and a self-learner also helps companies overlook inexperience. Alway keep learning new things, reading new books, online courses and developing yourself to be the very best version of you. That includes leaning from everyone around you too and asking for more responsibility at work. Experience is a great teacher!
3. NETWORKING
Your biggest asset is your network. Keep building new connections within and outside your organization. Even social media sites like LinkedIn and Facebook can be of great help. Think of every professional you meet as a potential reference.
4. TIME MANAGEMENT
Develop good time management habits early on. Your workload will only increase with time, and so will your responsibilities. Be ready when they do.
5. CHANGES IN YOUR LIFESTYLE
This would be the first time you do a 9-5 job and you might not have flexible timings. Be open to adjust and realize that now it might take more effort on your part to spare time for friends and family. You might have to stay alone and thats ok. Learn to enjoy your own company!
